As a yoga studio owner for more than 16 years, yoga teacher and, a teacher trainer, Stephanie struggled with how to set a standard for asana teachers at her two small-town studios. Teachers would approach her with lots of experience, and powerful awareness and presence, so she would give them a class on the schedule.
Because her studios had developed a unique culture of understanding basic human movement mechanics, many of her students would approach her and ask why the new teacher was teaching something inconsistent with what they had learned.
When she approached a teacher with this feedback they were often offended that their training or experience was being questioned. This is in no way was the fault of the teacher. Yoga teachers have not, traditionally, been trained in biomechanics. This is a new standard that is being asked of us, and one that is essential to empowering a life long practice.
“SAYF created a tangible knowing of body awareness and body love. After years of practicing yoga as exercise I feel like I am practicing a deep relationship with my body with yoga asana, and my strength and flexibility is changing in beautiful and nourishing ways.”~ Anonymous
“Very well organized and deeply useful program based on sound principles for modern yoga.”~ Anonymous
“The SAYF training gave me new tools to better serve a diverse clientele within a yoga class. I was also inspired to pay attention to and change some of the wording I use to stay neutral, open and affirming. So many options to modify to different people (anatomy, injury, psychological) that I'm far more confident in teaching classes that are safe and inclusive.” Dr. Karen Wright
